What recoloring fixes

Color problems we fix on leather furniture

Recoloring a sun-faded leather sofa cushion

Sun-faded cushions

Seats and backs bleached by the San Diego sun brought back to one even, rich color.

Worn leather sofa armrest

Worn arms and headrests

Spots rubbed lighter by hands, or darkened by body oils and hair products, recolored to match the rest.

Recolored cognac leather recliner

Faded recliners and chairs

Headrests and arms fade first. We recolor the whole chair so it reads as one piece again.

Ink stain and burn on brown leather

Stains and dye transfer

Denim dye transfer, ink and marks left by harsh cleaners removed or covered with a new, even finish.

Espresso-brown recolored leather sofa

A completely new color

Take a faded brown sectional to deep espresso, or change the color to suit a new room.

Filling a crack in a leather couch

Cracks and scratches first

Cracks, scratches and small tears are repaired before we recolor, so the new finish is smooth.

The whole piece

Photograph the entire sofa or chair in daylight so we can see its size and how evenly it has faded.

2

The worst area

One close-up of the most faded or worn spot — arms, headrest or seat fronts.

3

The original color

Lift a cushion and photograph the leather underneath — it shows the color we will match. Send all three with the form below or by text.

Spot or full recolor

Just the worn spots — or the whole piece

Sometimes only the arms and seat fronts need color; sometimes the whole sofa has faded unevenly. From your photos we’ll tell you honestly which one your piece needs.

Which leather can be recolored

Best results

Protected (pigmented) leather

The leather on most sofas and recliners — Natuzzi, Restoration Hardware, Pottery Barn, Ethan Allen, American Leather, Stressless. Recolors evenly, including a full color change.

Works well

Semi-aniline leather

A light finish over dyed leather. We keep the new color thin so the leather stays soft and keeps its natural look.

What we don't recolor: peeling bonded or faux leather. New color can't hold on a surface that is flaking off — we'll tell you from the photos.
Recolor or replace?

When recoloring makes sense

A new quality leather sofa usually costs $3,000 or more. Recoloring keeps the frame and leather you already have. Repairs in San Diego start at $400.

Worth recoloring

  • Genuine leather that is faded, patchy or worn in color
  • Leather that is still soft, or has a few repairable cracks
  • Quality or designer furniture you want to keep
  • You want a new color for a new room

Better to replace

  • Bonded or faux leather that is peeling
  • Leather dried and cracked through across most of the piece
  • Inexpensive furniture where a recolor costs close to new

Alex did an outstanding job fixing a dye transfer stain on a leather car seat. His work was beautiful (it looks brand new), his price was fair, and he was really pleasant to work with. I'd recommend him without hesitation.

Alexander did a great job fixing a small cut on our 1960 T-Bird back seat. The color and texture was better than our expectations! We finally had to tell Alex to stop as he is a true perfectionist! We also appreciated his honesty in telling us that our RV vinyl would be more practical to replace than repair. He could have repaired them, but advised us that the damage would continue do to poor quality of vinyl used by the manufacturer.

Alex did an amazing job fixing the dashboard crack on my truck! You can’t even tell it was there. Great work, very reasonable on the price and a pleasant person to deal with. I will likely have him come back to refresh my bottom front seat bolsters.

I had a vintage Chanel bag that needed a new top coat and Alexander and his staff provided amazing service, including home pick up and drop off. All throughout the process, Alexander was very responsive, and the bag came back beautiful. The price was incredibly reasonable, as well. I will definitely be a returning customer!
FAQ

Leather recoloring questions

Repairs start at $400 in San Diego. The final price depends on the size of the damage and the piece. Outside the city a travel fee may apply depending on distance — we confirm it when we quote. Text us photos for an exact price.

No. The color bonds to the prepared leather in thin, flexible layers and is sealed with a protective topcoat. Every job has a 1-year warranty.

Yes — on genuine pigmented leather we can go darker or to a different color. Going much lighter is harder; send photos and we’ll tell you what’s possible.

Either. From your photos we’ll tell you whether a spot recolor will blend or the whole piece needs one even coat.

No. When bonded or faux leather peels, the surface itself is failing, so new color won’t hold.

Keep the piece out of direct afternoon sun where you can, wipe off sunscreen and spills quickly, and condition the leather every few months.

Leather recoloring across San Diego County

Sun through big coastal windows is the number one reason leather loses its color here, followed by sunscreen, hair products and dry Santa Ana winds. We recolor sofas, sectionals and recliners in homes from the coast to East County — on site, usually in one visit.
